Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Classical

Born January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, died December 5, 1791 in Vienna, Austria. Born in Salzburg Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the only surviving son of the court violinist and composer Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna Maria. Together with his elder sister Maria Anna ("Nannerl", 1751-1829) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was taught early by his father to play different instruments. He never attended a regular school

Having written more than six hundred works during his short life, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an exceptionally prolific composer, even compared to the likes of Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin – his yearly output, enough for a five-hour recital, surpasses that of all them together.

In addition to playing harpsichord, violin, and organ, Mozart was an accomplished piano player, and while not as phenomenal a performer as Liszt or Paganini, listeners had been thoroughly impressed with his recitals, where he could improvise a long while and was playing concerti from memory – he was among first to do so. According to Mozart, his favorite work of his was Piano Quintet for Winds, and while not his best-known, it is indeed a remarkable composition. Same as many, Haydn admired Mozart’s genius, and the latter composed six string quartets dedicated to his close friend Joseph.

Expressive as they are, his works owe its their quality not only to a good education, but also a long-lasting European tour during which Mozart had a unique opportunity to learn more about musical tradition of different countries. Still, some of his compositions weren’t accepted by either general public (too difficult) or religious people (Così fan tutte for having a frivolous plot).

For his short life, oeuvre of Mozart is notably vast and includes everything from songs to operas to symphonic works. Here we are glad to offer you almost all that: in our catalogue of sheet music a total 5740 of scores could be found – both original compositions and transcriptions. 476 of them are free, granting endless hours of enjoyment for music lovers worldwide.
