Franz Schubert

Romantic

Born January 31, 1797 in Vienna, died there November 19, 1828. Franz Schubert’s father Franz Theodor was a teacher at a municipal school; his mother had been a cook in a Viennese family before her marriage. Franz was born as the thirteenth of fifteen children from whom only five survived their first year. At the age of five Schubert received the first lessons from his father, at six he started to attend a regular school

A copious composer, Franz Schubert left a tremendous legacy of works written during his active period of thirteen years. Within just one year of 1815 he composed about 100 songs, a record beaten in 1840 by Schumann, who, depressed by the circumstances preventing him from getting married, exceeded that number by 50. At this very time he also composed two symphonies – the genre where Schubert acted as successor of Beethoven. It would be a wrong assertion that Schubert prospered as a composer especially when we take into account his earnings – he couldn’t even get married – his meager income of a teacher was not sufficient to provide a family which was against the law existing at the time. His operas and music to pieces were visibly weaker than his symphonic compositions and impromptus, that’s why the latter are better remembered today. Nevertheless, we adhere to the opinion that the creative work of the outstanding Austrian composer should be represented in all its affluence – the total number of his works in our catalogue amounts to 9609, and 491 of them you can download for free. Such a rich choice will unfailingly provide you with the opportunity to find the sheet music you need – we are positive about it.
