Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven

Classical — Romantic

Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, died in 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A musician himself his father started Beethoven’s early musical education, nurturing the ambition of educating a child prodigy. When Ludwig van Beethoven was 12 years old his father had almost ruined the family because of his severe alcoholism. Ludwig had to work to support the family, first as an assistant to his teacher, court organist Christian Gottlob Neefe, then as an assistant organist earning a salary of 150 guilders

With his name standing in the same line as those of Bach, Mozart or Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven is unquestionably one of the most outstanding and radical composers on the music arena throughout history. As he used to say about himself, “Beethoven can write music, thank God, but he can do nothing else on earth.” However, the music he composed during his lifetime left an impervious imprint on the generations of composers to come ever after him.

Despite the hardships of the teen age and the growing deafness that eventually took his hearing away, Beethoven is considered a significant figure at time when Classical era was gradually emerging into Romantic. He is an acclaimed virtuoso of keyboard performance, who was admired by aristocracy despite his eccentric and anti-aristocratic manners. Literally, all his works – piano concertos, sonatas, cantatas, string quartets, and especially symphonies – became unsurpassed masterpieces and uppermost samples of perfection. Not being aware of that, Beethoven made an inestimable contribution to enlarging the scope of composing, conducting and performing possibilities.
